Passing target: 80% (24/30)
On the same roadway, a school bus is stopped with flashing red lights and an extended stop arm. What must an approaching driver do?
Yellow school bus B faces left on a two-way undivided road, with an extended stop arm and a close-up of its red warning lamps. Blue car A is behind the bus; silver car C faces right on the other side of the yellow centerline. No vehicle halo or route is shown.
Correct answer: Stop before the bus until it moves, its signals stop, or its driver signals you on.
Why
Stop before reaching the bus. The handbook advises stopping at least 20 feet away. Remain stopped until the bus moves, its driver signals you to proceed, or its visual signals stop. Even then, move only when children and the roadway are clear. The opposite-roadway exception on a qualifying divided highway is a separate rule.
