How can a driver check a basic following interval in ordinary conditions?
Blue A follows silver B on a clear two-way road. A fixed roadside post is beside the road. In this starting frame, the rear of B is level with that post. The picture does not yet state a time interval.
Correct answer: Count at least two seconds after the car ahead passes a fixed point.
Why
Use a fixed roadside point: after the vehicle ahead passes it, allow at least two seconds before you reach it in ordinary conditions. The same time gap covers more distance at a higher speed. The handbook advises four or five seconds in poor conditions. The law also requires a reasonable and prudent gap and, except when overtaking or passing, at least 20 feet for each 10 mph of speed. The two-second check is handbook guidance and does not override a need for more space.
