A vehicle is stuck on railroad tracks and a train is visibly approaching. What should the occupants do first?
Car A is stalled on the tracks as a train approaches from the left. A US railroad crossbuck identifies the crossing.
Correct answer: Get out and walk away at 45 degrees toward the train.
Why
Get everyone out immediately. Move well away from the tracks, diagonally at about 45 degrees toward the approaching train, to stay out of the likely path of debris. Once safe, call the railroad emergency number on the crossing’s blue sign and give the crossing ID, or call 911 for immediate danger. Do not return to the vehicle.
