Observation, Speed & SpaceStandalone practice
Under ordinary conditions, what following-space check gives a beginning driver a useful safety margin?
Blue car A follows silver car B in good conditions. A fixed roadside post is level with B’s rear in this starting frame.
Correct answer: Stay at least four seconds behind the car ahead.
Why
Alaska DMV recommends a four-second following gap in ordinary conditions. 13 AAC 02.090 requires at least two seconds and a reasonable, prudent gap for conditions. Increase the four-second gap to six seconds or more when towing or on wet or slippery roads.
