Passing target: 80% (40/50)
An ambulance approaches from behind with a siren sounding and red lights flashing. You are on this ordinary two-way road, clear of any intersection, with no police direction. What should you do?
On an ordinary two-way road, a white-and-blue box ambulance approaches behind blue car A with red warning lights flashing and its siren sounding. The roadway edge to A’s right is clear.
Correct answer: Yield, pull over near the right edge and stop until it passes
Why
For an immediately approaching emergency vehicle with an audible signal and visible flashing red light, BC requires yielding, moving parallel and as close as possible to the nearest roadway edge clear of an intersection, and stopping until it has passed, unless a peace officer directs otherwise. On this ordinary two-way road that is the right edge. Check and move calmly, watch for another emergency vehicle, and check before rejoining. A left-side position can be appropriate on a one-way road or a divided highway’s left lane; those are outside this scene.
