Passing target: 80% (32/40)
On a highway with two lanes in your direction, you approach an emergency vehicle stopped on the right shoulder with warning lights flashing and no protective barrier. What should you do?
Car A approaches a collision response in the right lane. An ambulance with flashing red lamps and two other vehicles are stopped on the right shoulder. The left lane is clear.
Correct answer: Slow down, and move one lane away if it is safe and lawful.
Why
Slow down and approach with caution. When it is safe, practicable and lawful, also change into an available lane away from the stopped vehicle. If that lane change is unsafe, stay in your lane at a reasonable and prudent speed. California also applies this rule to specified roadside vehicles and, from 2026, other stationary vehicles displaying hazard lights or another warning device.
