Why does a safe following gap require more physical distance as highway speed increases?
Correct answer: More distance is traveled during reaction and braking time
Why
At higher speed, you travel farther during the same reaction time. A time gap such as the handbook’s normal three-second guide therefore becomes a larger physical distance as speed rises. Add more time for poor visibility, slippery roads, limited traction or other hazards. A fixed number of car lengths is not a safe rule at every speed.
