The service brakes fail to produce braking when you press the pedal. What emergency steps should you try while looking for a safe escape route?
Correct answer: Pump the brakes, shift down, and apply the parking brake gradually.
Why
For actual brake failure, try pumping the pedal to restore pressure, shift to a lower gear, and apply the parking brake gradually while steering toward a safe stopping area. Warn others as appropriate. This is different from normal ABS emergency braking: with working ABS, use firm continuous pedal pressure rather than pumping. Have the vehicle repaired before further driving.
