When should a driver normally begin reducing speed for a freeway exit?
Blue A is in the right through lane before the opening of an exit lane. Silver B is farther ahead in the same through lane; the exit curves away to the right.
Correct answer: After entering the deceleration lane or exit lane, when one is provided.
Why
Plan the exit early. Normally maintain a safe traffic speed until you enter the deceleration lane or exit lane, then slow smoothly for the ramp and its controls. Traffic queues, poor traction or an immediate hazard can require earlier slowing. Do not insist on maintaining speed when it is unsafe.
