In favorable conditions, how can a driver check a basic following cushion?
Blue A follows silver B on a clear two-way road beside a fixed roadside post. In this starting frame, the rear of B is level with the post.
Correct answer: Keep at least two seconds behind the lead car, using a fixed point.
Why
Choose a fixed roadside point. Start counting when the rear of the vehicle ahead passes it. Your vehicle’s front should not reach it before the two-second count ends. Two seconds is the handbook’s minimum in favorable conditions; use more time when rain, poor visibility, traffic or other hazards require it. The law always requires a reasonable and prudent distance.
