Passing target: 80% (20/25)
An authorized emergency vehicle approaches using audible and visual warnings on an ordinary two-way road with one lane each way. No officer directs otherwise. What should you do?
On an ordinary two-way road, a white-and-blue box ambulance approaches behind blue car A with red warning lights flashing and its siren sounding. The roadway edge to A’s right is clear.
Correct answer: Pull to the right edge, clear of intersections, and stop.
Why
Yield, clear the intersection and stop parallel and as close as possible to the right edge or curb in this ordinary two-way-road example. On a multilane, divided or one-way highway, Hawaii’s rule specifies the nearest edge or curb. Remain stopped until the emergency vehicle passes, unless a police officer directs otherwise; applicable county ordinances may also govern.
