In good conditions, what minimum following interval is recommended behind another car?
Blue car A follows silver car B in good conditions. A fixed roadside post is level with B’s rear in this starting frame.
Correct answer: At least three seconds
Why
The handbook recommends at least three seconds behind another car in good conditions. Increase this interval at higher speeds and in poor weather. The law requires a reasonable and prudent gap for the speed, traffic and road conditions; three seconds is not a guarantee that every stop is safe.
