A 6-year-old rides in the back of a modern passenger car with lap-and-shoulder belts. What is required?
Correct answer: An appropriate child restraint, such as a booster seat.
Why
Children under 8 must be secured in an appropriate child restraint. A booster must be used with a lap-and-shoulder belt and must fit the child and the manufacturer’s instructions. Illinois has a narrow exception for a child over 40 pounds in a back seat that has no lap-and-shoulder belt: the child may use the lap belt there. That exception does not apply to this car.
