A car is following you too closely. What is the safest response when an appropriate opportunity appears?
On a divided road with two eastbound lanes, blue A is in the left lane. Silver C follows A closely, and B is farther ahead. The right lane is empty in the illustrated segment. The opposite carriageway is outside the view. Positions alone do not establish time gaps.
Correct answer: Change lanes or pull off slowly to let it pass.
Why
Do not retaliate or brake abruptly. Keep control and allow the following driver to pass when you can safely move to another lane or pull off. Maintain a safe forward gap so you can respond smoothly rather than brake suddenly.
