Passing target: 80% (28/35)
There is one travel lane in your direction, and a bicycle pass can otherwise be made safely and legally. What minimum clearance must you leave beside the bicyclist?
Blue A is behind a helmeted bicyclist on a road with one lane in this direction. Both face right; no passing position or lateral distance is shown.
Correct answer: At least 3 feet.
Why
Leave at least 3 feet between your vehicle and the bicyclist and keep that clearance until safely past. If another lane travels in the same direction, change into it before passing when practicable and legal. Wait if you cannot pass safely. Passing a bicycle in a no-passing zone has a narrow exception: the bicycle must be traveling below half the posted limit; you must not exceed that limit; sufficient clearance must allow all passing requirements; and the hill, curve, intersection, railway, bridge, and tunnel restrictions still apply.
