Before opening your parked car’s door toward moving traffic, what is the safest procedure?
Correct answer: Look behind for traffic and bicycles, then open when clear.
Why
Do not open a door into moving traffic until it is reasonably safe and will not interfere with others. The Dutch Reach uses the hand farther from the door to encourage you to turn and look behind; on the driver’s side this is the right hand. Check mirrors and your surroundings as well, and close the door promptly.
