When may a 15-year-old apply for an Indiana learner's permit?
Correct answer: After enrolling in BMV-licensed behind-the-wheel driver education.
Why
At age 15, an applicant must show enrollment in approved behind-the-wheel driver education and meet the other permit requirements. Online theory alone is not the required enrollment. Without driver education, the ordinary minimum permit age is 16. For family practice under the driver-education pathway, the learner must have begun the approved course and be accompanied in front by a person with valid driving privileges: a relative at least 25, or a spouse at least 21. Different supervision provisions apply to other practice pathways.
