Passing target: 20/25 correct (TLA practice target)
In normal traffic and good weather, how can a driver establish a useful following gap?
Blue car follows silver car in good conditions. A fixed roadside post is level with the lead car’s rear in this starting frame.
Correct answer: Use a fixed point and stay three to four seconds behind the vehicle ahead.
Why
In ordinary conditions, the Iowa manual recommends a 3–4-second following gap. Choose a fixed point and count the time between the vehicle ahead passing it and your vehicle reaching it. Increase the gap for speed, poor traction or limited visibility. The law requires a reasonable and prudent gap; it does not set a universal three-second minimum.
