How should you use an acceleration lane when entering a multi-lane highway?
Blue car A is in a freeway acceleration lane below two eastbound through lanes. Silver B is ahead and silver C behind in the nearest through lane, with an illustrative space between them.
Correct answer: Reach traffic speed, find a gap, and merge
Why
Use the acceleration lane to approach the traffic flow’s speed within safe and legal limits. Find a safe opening, signal and merge smoothly, then cancel the signal. Highway traffic has priority; if a safe merge is not available, do not force entry or treat the shoulder as a travel lane.
