Passing target: 80% (32/40)
Your right wheels drift off the pavement onto the shoulder. There is no drop-off at the pavement edge. What is the safest recovery approach?
The blue car’s right wheels are on a shoulder flush with the pavement. The car remains parallel to the roadway; the edge has no drop-off or bevel. No question path selects a recovery maneuver.
Correct answer: Hold control, slow down, and return smoothly when clear.
Why
Do not turn back onto the pavement at once. Stay on the shoulder and slow down gently. With no drop-off, check traffic and steer gently back onto the road. If the shoulder is much lower than the pavement, slow to about 10 mph, check traffic both ways, then turn the wheels sharply back onto the pavement.
