Safe & Responsible DrivingStandalone practice
An adult Maine driver with a full license is stopped at a red light. May the driver hold a phone to make an ordinary nonemergency call?
Correct answer: No; the ban also covers stops at traffic lights
Why
Do not use a handheld phone for an ordinary call while operating on a public way, including while temporarily stopped at a traffic light. A driver aged 18 or older who has neither an intermediate license nor a learner’s permit may use the permitted hands-free mode. Safely pull to the side of or off the way and halt before ordinary handheld use. The law separately defines emergency communications and specific employment exceptions.
