A 17-year-old received a first Maine license 30 days ago. Can the driver carry an unrelated classmate with no qualified accompanying driver?
Correct answer: No; the initial passenger restriction applies
Why
During the initial 270-day restriction, a newly licensed driver under 18 may carry immediate family, but other passengers require a qualified licensed operator beside the driver. That operator must be at least 20, have held a valid license for two years, hold the appropriate class and comply with license restrictions. The law includes specified household and guardianship relationships within the family exception. A violation can extend the restriction beyond the eighteenth birthday.
