Official signs designate the shared center lane for left turns only. A slow car is ahead. May you use that lane to pass it?
Lane-marking detail of a three-lane two-way road with an empty shared center lane, opposing white left-turn arrows and yellow boundaries. Blue A and silver B face opposite directions in their own through lanes. The slower lead car and official signs described in the question are outside this schematic.
Correct answer: No; obey the turn-only designation
Why
Do not use an officially designated turn-only lane to pass or cruise. Signal and check traffic before entering it for the permitted turn. Maine’s general two-way-lane statute also addresses other configurations, including qualifying passing in an unrestricted center lane and a two-part left turn from a driveway. Follow the actual signs and lane controls.
