Passing target: 88% (22/25)
You are passing a steadily ridden bicycle that is lawfully positioned, on a road wide enough to leave the statutory clearance. What minimum lateral space must you give it?
A is alongside cyclist B on a wide roadway. A neutral card says A is passing B. The question has no clearance number, ruler or highlighted gap.
Correct answer: 3 feet between your vehicle and the bicycle.
Why
In this ordinary situation, leave at least three feet between the motor vehicle and bicycle, and pass only with due care. Section 21-1209 lists exceptions involving specified rider-rule violations, a solely bicycle-caused unsteady course, and insufficient roadway width for a lawful three-foot pass; these are not permission to pass dangerously. Crossing a no-passing marking is separately limited to the minimum necessary adjustment and remains subject to sight-distance and yielding duties.
