You know that your highway exit is approaching. When should you get into the lane needed for that exit?
Correct answer: Well in advance, when you can change lanes safely.
Why
Choose the correct exit lane well in advance. Check mirrors and blind spots, signal, and move only when the needed space is clear. Signal the exit at least 500 feet before the ramp, as the handbook instructs. If you cannot exit safely, continue to the next exit rather than stop, reverse or cut across traffic.
