Passing target: 8 correct signs and 24 correct rules (TLA practice targets)
A stopped emergency vehicle is displaying the required warning lights beside your direction of travel. Two lanes run in your direction, and a safe lane change is possible. What should you do?
Blue A approaches police SUV B stopped on the paved right shoulder with red and blue warning lights flashing. Two same-direction travel lanes are shown; the left lane is clear. The opposing carriageway is outside this view.
Correct answer: Slow at least 10 mph below the limit and move over a lane.
Why
Use due care, reduce speed to at least 10 mph below the posted limit, and move to a lane away from the stationary emergency vehicle when the statutory lane and safety conditions permit. These are combined duties, not alternatives. If weather, road or traffic conditions make moving over unsafe, you must still make the required speed reduction. The law covers specified stationary emergency and service vehicles using the required lights; an opposite separated roadway has a distinct exception.
