Observation, Speed & SpaceStandalone practice
You drive on a city street with cars parked along the curb. A ball rolls into the street from between two parked cars. What should you do?
A ball is in the street between two cars parked along the curb, ahead of A; the hidden area behind the parked cars is not shown.
Correct answer: Slow down, cover the brake and watch for a child who may run after it
Why
The SIPDE system has five steps: scan, identify, predict, decide and execute. Children and animals can make short, fast moves, so a clue such as a ball tells you to predict what may come next. When you act early by speed and position, you keep time and space to avoid a crash.

Related Minnesota questions
You drive in the right lane of a four-lane city street and want to move into the left lane. Your signal is on. Your inside mirror and left side mirror show no vehicles. What should you do before you move over? The road is dry and traffic is light. The car ahead passes a road sign, and you start to count. Your front bumper reaches the same sign when you say "one-thousand-two." What does this tell you?On a freeway, you plan to move from the center lane to the right lane. When should your turn signal be on?You are an adult driver with a full license. Freeway traffic is stopped, and your car is in a travel lane. A text message arrives on your phone. When may you hold the phone and read the message? It is raining hard, and the highway is slippery. You drive a standard car. How much following time should you keep behind the vehicle ahead? The posted speed limit is 55 mph. Blowing snow now hides the lane lines and cuts how far you can see. What speed does Minnesota law require?
