You are 16, have an instruction permit and are driving with your mother beside you. Your phone is paired with the car, and a friend calls. The call is not an emergency. What should you do?
Correct answer: Let the call go, because a permit driver under 18 may not use a phone, even hands-free.
Why
A phone call takes your attention away from the road even when your hands stay on the wheel, and new drivers have less experience in finding hazards. That is why Minnesota bans all phone use while driving for permit holders under 18 and for provisional license holders. You may use the phone in an emergency, for example to call 911 when someone's life or safety is in danger. To return a call, park in a safe place first.
