Sam, 16, got a first-year restricted license two months ago. No adult driver is in the car. How many passengers under 18 who are not Sam's family members may ride with Sam?
Correct answer: One passenger under 18 who is not a family member
Why
Each extra teen passenger raises the crash risk for a new driver, mostly through distraction. The limit rises to three such passengers in the second six months. Family members under 18 do not count toward the limit, and everyone in the vehicle must wear a seat belt. The restrictions end after one year or at age 18, whichever comes first.
