You have parallel parked on a busy street, and a bike lane runs beside your car on the driver's side. What should you do before you open your door?
A is parked at the curb, with a bike lane beside its driver’s side. B approaches from behind through that lane.
Correct answer: Check your mirror and look over your shoulder, and open it only when no one is coming.
Why
A door that opens into a bike lane or traffic lane is a serious danger to bicyclists, who can be thrown into moving traffic. Nebraska law also bans leaving a door open on the traffic side for longer than you need to load or unload people or property. Remind your passengers to check before they open doors on the traffic side too.
