On a two-lane road, a school bus ahead of you stops. Its red lights flash, and its stop arm is out. What must you do?
A follows a stopped school bus in the same lane of a two-way road. The bus’s red lights flash and its stop arm extends toward the center of the road.
Correct answer: Stop and wait until the lights are off, the arm is in, and the bus moves.
Why
Flashing yellow lights mean the bus is about to stop: slow to 25 mph or less and get ready to stop. The red lights and stop arm come on when the door opens, and children may cross in front of the bus, so stop a reasonable distance back. The manual says to wait until the arm is retracted and the red lights are off; Nebraska law adds that the bus must also start to move before you go.
