You press the brake pedal, but the car does not slow down. What should you do first?
Correct answer: Apply the parking brake slowly, and release it if the car starts to skid.
Why
The parking brake works through a separate system, so it can often slow the car when the main brakes fail. Because it usually acts on the rear wheels, a hard pull can lock them and spin the car. Following the maintenance schedule in the owner's manual makes brake failure much less likely.
