A fire truck with its siren and lights on passes you on a city street, on its way to a fire alarm. You follow in the same direction, about 300 feet behind it. What is true?
Enlarged details identify A and responding fire truck B with its warning lights on. Below, a street overview shows A following B with the stated 300-foot bumper-to-bumper gap; the card identifies the sounding siren.
Correct answer: You are too close, because the law requires at least 500 feet behind it.
Why
Fire trucks may stop suddenly, turn without warning, or be followed by more emergency vehicles, so a long gap keeps you out of their way. The law also bars you from driving into or parking in the block where the truck has stopped, because crews need that space for hoses and equipment. This rule is in addition to the normal four-second following gap.
