You are taking loose branches and bags of leaves to the town dump in the open bed of a pickup truck. Part of the trip is on a highway. How must the load be carried?
A parked pickup has loose branches and open bags of leaves in its bed before a trip to the dump. The load is shown clearly in an enlarged view.
Correct answer: Tie it down or cover it so nothing can fall, blow out or slide onto the road
Why
Items that fall or blow off a vehicle can hit other vehicles or make drivers swerve, and the manual warns of a costly fine when an unsecured load causes a crash. A load counts as secure only when nothing in it can move, drop, leak out or be carried away by the wind. RSA 266:72 requires loads to be fastened so they cannot come loose, and open loads of sand, gravel or similar material must be fully covered.
