You are driving in the right lane of a four-lane road. A car ahead in the left lane begins to drift toward your lane with no signal. Which response follows the New Jersey manual's crash-prevention formula?
A travels in the right lane of a four-lane road. B, ahead in the adjacent left lane, begins to cross the broken white line toward A’s lane with no turn signal.
Correct answer: Ease off the gas, cover the brake and be ready to steer away, without jerking the wheel.
Why
Most crashes are caused by driver error, and the New Jersey manual's crash-prevention formula has three parts: be alert, be prepared and act in time. Being alert means never assuming that other drivers will not make mistakes. Being prepared means knowing what you would do, for example slowing and keeping a way out. Acting in time means responding early and calmly; keeping your foot near the brake also shortens your reaction distance.
