Jess is short and likes to sit close to the steering wheel. How much space should she keep between the center of the steering wheel and the center of her breastbone?
Jess sits close to the steering wheel with her elbows bent and her seat belt fastened. The side view shows her breastbone and the center of the wheel; no distance is marked.
Correct answer: At least 10 inches, while she can still reach the pedals and controls.
Why
A correctly belted adult of average size usually meets the air bag only after it has fully inflated. Sitting too close puts the chest in the path of the bag while it is still opening. Adjust the seat so you can reach the pedals and controls easily, which for most drivers is about an arm's length from the wheel.
