Passing target: 80% (40/50)
You are following a car on a dry highway. It passes a road sign, and you start counting: one thousand-one, one thousand-two. Your car reaches the same sign as you say 'two.' What does this tell you?
B has passed the roadside sign, and A’s front reaches that same sign as the card’s two-second count ends. Both cars remain in the same lane of the dry highway.
Correct answer: You are too close; drop back until at least three seconds pass before you reach the sign.
Why
Distances are hard to judge by eye, so the New Jersey manual uses a time gap: the three-seconds-plus rule. Pick a fixed object ahead, start counting when the car in front passes it, and make sure at least three seconds pass before you reach it. Because the gap is measured in time, it grows automatically as your speed increases. Three seconds is for good conditions; add more time when the road or weather is bad.
