You adjust the driver's seat in a car with a steering-wheel air bag. Which setup gives you the best protection in a crash?
Correct answer: Belt fastened, and the seat set so your chest is at least 10 inches from the air bag cover.
Why
In a head-on crash, the air bag fills in a split second so that a front-seat rider does not hit the wheel, dashboard or windshield. The belt holds you in the right position for it and helps you keep control of the car, which can prevent a second crash. Most correctly belted adults are safer with an air bag, as long as they do not sit too close to it.
