You drive north on a divided highway with two lanes in each direction and a grass median. On the southbound side, across the median, a school bus stops with its red lights flashing and its stop arm out. What must you do?
A travels north on a highway with two lanes in each direction and a grass median. On the southbound roadway, school bus B is stopped with red warning lamps lit and its left-side STOP arm extended.
Correct answer: Continue with care, because only the traffic that follows the bus must stop.
Why
On a divided road, state law generally does not let a school bus load or unload at a place where children would have to cross the road, except at traffic signals. So children normally do not cross the median to your side, and oncoming traffic can continue. The same exception applies on a road of four or more lanes with a center turning lane, but not on a two-lane road with a center turning lane, where all traffic must stop.
