Passing target: 80% (24/30)
You are driving on a four-lane road that has no median and no center turn lane. On the other side of the road, a school bus stops with its red lights flashing and its stop arm out. What must you do?
A approaches a stopped school bus B from the opposite direction on a four-lane road. Double yellow center lines separate the directions with no median or center turn lane; B’s red lights are lit and its STOP arm is extended.
Correct answer: Stop, because on a four-lane road with no median, traffic in both directions must stop for the bus.
Why
North Carolina lets opposite-direction traffic continue only when the road is split into two roadways by a median, a physical barrier, or a center left-turn lane on a road of at least four lanes. An undivided four-lane road has no such split, and children may cross in front of any lane. Passing a stopped school bus brings a minimum $500 fine and 5 driver license points.
