Passing target: 80% (24/30)
You are driving your 4-year-old nephew, who weighs 35 pounds. Your car has a rear seat and an active passenger-side front air bag, and his child seat is not designed for use with an air bag. Where and how must he ride?
A cutaway of car A shows empty rear and front seats, with the front of the car at the right. The card gives the child’s age and weight and states that the front passenger air bag is active; no seating location is selected.
Correct answer: In the rear seat in a child seat that fits him, because he is under 5 and under 40 pounds.
Why
An air bag opens from the dashboard at up to 200 mph and can seriously injure or kill a small child who sits close to it. The handbook also advises that children age 12 and under ride buckled in a rear seat. Air bags add protection only when everyone is properly buckled or restrained.
