Passing target: 16 correct signs and 16 correct rules
How should a driver normally overtake another vehicle?
Blue car A follows silver car B in the right lane of a road with two northbound lanes. Both cars face up the image; the left lane is empty. No passing path or return point is marked.
Correct answer: Pass on the left and return when the lane is clear and safe.
Why
Plan the entire pass, signal and check traffic before moving left. On a two-way road, make sure the opposing lane is clear far enough ahead for the whole manoeuvre. Before returning right, see the passed vehicle’s headlights in your inside mirror, signal and check again. Do not exceed the speed limit or cut in so closely that the other driver must slow. The illustration shows this final return stage on a multi-lane road.
