Passing target: 16 correct signs and 16 correct rules
What is the purpose of leaving at least a two-second following gap in good conditions?
Blue car A follows car B with open space around it on a two-lane carriageway.
Correct answer: It gives room to stop if the vehicle ahead stops suddenly.
Why
The handbook’s two-second method helps judge a basic following gap in good conditions: start counting when the vehicle ahead passes a fixed landmark, and reach it no sooner than two seconds later. Allow more space for poor traction, limited visibility, a heavy load or an obstructed view. The illustration shows room to react; its pixel spacing does not measure seconds.
