Your niece is 6 years old, 4 feet 2 inches tall, and weighs 52 pounds. How must she ride in your car?
Correct answer: In a booster seat, because she is under 8 and shorter than 4 feet 9 inches.
Why
A booster seat raises the child so that the adult belt fits: the lap belt low across the hips, and the shoulder belt across the shoulder and chest. Without a booster, the belt can ride up onto the stomach and neck and cause serious injury in a crash. From age 8 to 15, a child must use a safety belt or a child restraint.
