Licensing & Test ReadinessStandalone practice
Maya is 16 and got her probationary license four months ago. She wants to drive home alone from a friend's house at 12:30 a.m. on a Saturday. She has no work, school or religious-event papers. May she drive?
Correct answer: No. In the first 12 months she may not drive from midnight to 6 a.m. without a parent or guardian.
Why
The exceptions are trips to or from work, an official school event or a religious event, and the driver must carry papers from the employer or event official (the BMV has forms for this). An emergency is also a defense. Night driving is the riskiest time for new drivers, which is why the limit exists.
