Passing target: 80% (16/20)
You come to a railroad crossing that has a NO TRAIN HORN sign. The red lights on the crossbuck are flashing. There is no gate, and you do not see or hear a train. What must you do?
A approaches a railroad crossing with a crossbuck and flashing red warning lamps. A yellow NO TRAIN HORN sign is mounted before the crossing and repeated in a detail. There is no gate and no visible train.
Correct answer: Stop, and cross only after the lights stop flashing and the tracks are clear.
Why
In Oklahoma you must stop not more than 50 feet and not less than 15 feet from the nearest rail when a crossing signal warns of a train. A Quiet Zone crossing has a NO TRAIN HORN sign, and trains there do not blow the horn in normal operation, so silence tells you nothing. A train at 55 mph needs a mile or more to stop, so it cannot stop for a car on the tracks. If there is more than one track, make sure that every track is clear before you cross.
