You are in the right lane of a four-lane street, and your light is green. A person with a white cane is crossing in front of you, and you have stopped. The person has crossed your lane and the lane next to it and is now two lanes away. What must you do?
A is stopped in the right lane of a four-lane street with a green signal. B uses a white cane and is now in the third lane across from A, beyond A’s lane and the lane beside it. An enlarged detail identifies the white cane.
Correct answer: Stay stopped until the person has crossed the entire street.
Why
A person who is blind or has limited vision cannot see whether drivers have stopped, so the person depends on all traffic to stay stopped until the crossing is done. For this reason, Oregon gives such a pedestrian more protection than the usual lane-by-lane rule. Under Oregon law, a white cane is all white or white with a red tip.
