At 3:10 p.m. on a school day, you pass a SCHOOL SPEED LIMIT 20 sign with a flashing yellow light. You see no children near the road. What speed rule applies?
A approaches a school zone at 3:10 p.m. on a school day. No children are visible. An enlarged detail shows the official SCHOOL SPEED LIMIT 20 WHEN FLASHING sign with flashing yellow beacons.
Correct answer: 20 mph or less until an END SCHOOL ZONE sign or another speed sign.
Why
Oregon uses three kinds of school speed signs: one with a flashing light, one for school hours on school days, and one for when children are present. Each sign tells you when the 20 mph limit applies, so read the whole sign as you pass it. Children who arrive at or leave school can step into the road without warning, even when you saw none a moment before.
