A short driver moves the seat forward to reach the pedals. What is the minimum distance that should remain between the driver and the steering wheel in case the air bag deploys?
A side view shows a belted driver seated at the steering wheel, with the chest and wheel center visible. The card describes a short driver moving the seat forward to reach the pedals; no distance is marked.
Correct answer: 10 inches.
Why
An air bag inflates with great force in a fraction of a second, so a driver who sits too close can be badly hurt by it. Hold the wheel at 9 and 3 or at 8 and 4 o'clock, so the air bag does not throw your hands into your face. Air bags add to seat belts; they do not replace them.
