A school bus ahead is slowing with its alternating amber lights flashing. What should you do?
A school bus on an undivided road has amber warning lamps active as cars approach. A detail inset shows the bus lamps.
Correct answer: Slow down and prepare to stop.
Why
Alternating amber lights, or the bus’s hazard lights used to announce the stop, tell approaching drivers to prepare to stop. Slow early and watch for children. Once the red lights flash or the stop arm is extended, stop more than 5 m from the school bus. Do not confuse the preparation stage with permission to rush past.
